Wartime Crises
As if the industrial, financial, agricultural and military effort were not enough, a series of major crises hit Canada during the Great War. In 1916, a fire destroyed the Parliament Buildings and aroused great suspicion of foreign born nationals living in Canada. In 1917, the dwindling number of volunteers led to a prolonged debate regarding the need for conscription, which resulted in one of the country's most divisive elections ever. At the end of that same year, the Halifax Explosion killed thousands and tested the resolve of the nation. Finally, at war's end, a terrible outbreak of Spanish influenza claimed many more victims around the world and here at home.
